What’s RIGHT and what’s WRONG with the Seven Mountain Message?
What’s RIGHT?
Let’s begin with what is right.
In the Seven Mountain message, what is properly and rightfully identified, are what are those seven primary cultural influences that will shape any culture. Regardless whether it’s a more sophisticated western civilization or what may be seen as a third world culture.
Regardless of population, there are seven primary influences that are present within every culture. Just like the seven primary colors of light that are responsible for the multitude of diverse hues and tones that color our world.
Second, every believer has a common call and commission from the Lord to GO INTO ALL THE WORLD (including every sphere) and to be a LIGHT in darkness and an ambassador of the Kingdom of God— bringing the Hope of the Gospel to all that are within every sphere of society.
Believers were never called to withdraw into isolation from the world and so falsely express godly piety. That action subscribes to the practice of “hiding” our lamp instead of shining it in all the world for ALL THE WORLD TO SEE!
Within both the prayer and teachings of Jesus, He emphasized that His disciples are to be SENT INTO ALL THE WORLD! (John 17:18; Mark 16:15-20)
While each individual believer shares in fulfilling a common commission to bring the gospel into all the world, we each have different particular callings of service. Some might be called to shine as bright lights within government, another to shine within education, another within the sports and entertainment arena, others within the business world, etc, etc. (Philippians 2:15)
However, these are individual callings to be fulfilled and are not meant to be a deliberate and focused action taken by the “church” collectively.
The church is called to disciple the believers, equipping them to live godly and to be faithful to Christ in all manner of living. And to be active within the great commission, bringing the Gospel with power to the peoples of the world.
WHAT’S WRONG?
What I see that is a clear departure of the practices and focus of the NT, is that in the Seven Mountain message it really is presented as a Seven Mountain Mandate for the church.
The question must be asked, “did Jesus teach His disciples anywhere within the Gospel accounts on how they must infiltrate and seek to “convert” the seven cultural mountains of Rome”? No- it is not there.
The great emphasis and example of Jesus’ own life and ministry was bringing life, truth and deliverance to the individuals who were bound. His Kingdom was moving into the hearts of people. They in turn became a witness for Christ within their world. And quite specifically, within their sphere of influence.
Within the Seven Mountain mandate, the emphasis is more about converting culture than it is the individual hearts with the redemptive power of the Gospel.
In fact, teaching that the church has sought to convert individuals instead of converting “nations” is seen as a failure and misdirected focus.
It is clear that the word, “nations” which appears in Matthew 28:19 is the word, “ethnos,” meaning all people groups. It does not mean “geo-political” nation states. Like to preach and baptize “America”— we are to preach and baptize Americans, Latinos, Italians, Jews, Iranians, etc. Although being an American is not an ethnicity.
In the Book of Revelation, John had a vision of all peoples surrounding the Throne and singing a new song:
“And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; [10] And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth”.- Revelation 5:9-10
This Seven Mountain message and mandate focusing upon culture, can only really find traction among believers within a “free” society such as ours, where our leaders govern by the “consent” of the governed.
It cannot be universally applied nor practiced throughout all nations. However, the example and commission of Christ and the church of the book of Acts can and must continue— throughout every age and in every nation.
An interesting fact of history:
There was a time when the church went from being persecuted to becoming such a political force, that they were the primary influencers in all SEVEN CULTURAL MOUNTAINS!
The culture was the ancient Roman Empire and the christian church was fast becoming increasingly apostate, departing from being the supernatural entity of the Kingdom of God in the earth.
Instead, the church increasingly became more of a political and empirical force on earth. While Rome may have collapsed as an empire, it reemerged as a religious hierarchical system in an apostate form of the christian church, known as The Holy Roman Catholic Church— with papal armies and religious rulers.
And now that Popes (who represented the head of the church) were actually consecrating the political leaders and emperors, many erroneously thought the Kingdom of God has finally come!
But scripture and history have both proven that idea couldn’t be farther from the truth. Instead, although the church enjoyed a new day of both political clout and cultural influence, this shift of focus within the church led to a period in history known as the “Dark” ages.
Future times of revival and spiritual awakenings would be necessary in order to rescue believers out from its “Babylonian” entrapments and spiritual captivity. And to recover what is New Testament apostolic doctrine, power and practices as is witnessed and recorded within our New Testament.
